Several substances or reaction mixtures, for example aluminothermic mixtures, require a higher temperature for ignition than a common match can deliver. In such cases, a time fuse composition is an appropriate and also safe choice.
The reaction between potassium permanganate (KMnO4, about 1 cm3) and glycerol (C3H5(OH)3, a few drops) is used in this experiment. When these two substances mix, a spontaneous reaction will begin, slowly increasing the temperature of the mixture until, after 20-60 seconds, flames are produced. The reaction can be described with the equation:
